Different operating conditions—from temperature extremes to chemical exposure—require different material solutions. Three materials dominate the industrial sealing landscape: nitrile rubber (NBR), Viton (FKM), and silicone. Each brings distinct advantages and limitations that directly affect system reliability and service life.
NBR: The Cost-Effective Workhorse for General Applications
First and foremost, nitrile rubber, commonly known as NBR, stands as the most widely used o-ring material across many industries. It offers excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, hydraulic fluids, and water-based media. Furthermore, NBR provides good mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and compression set properties at moderate temperatures. As a result, it serves as a standard choice for general-purpose hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
In addition, NBR o-rings operate reliably within a temperature range of approximately -30°C to +120°C. This range covers most standard industrial hydraulic applications. However, NBR does have limitations worth noting. It performs poorly when exposed to ozone, weathering, and certain aggressive chemicals. Similarly, high-temperature environments above 120°C can cause NBR seals to harden and lose elasticity over time. Consequently, applications involving extreme heat or harsh chemical environments typically require alternative materials.

Viton: Premium Chemical and Heat Resistance for Demanding Conditions
By comparison, Viton—also known as FKM or fluorocarbon rubber—represents a significant upgrade in sealing performance. It delivers exceptional resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including fuels, solvents, acids, and mineral oils. Additionally, Viton maintains its sealing properties at much higher temperatures, typically up to 200°C and even higher for short periods. This heat resistance makes it ideal for high-temperature process applications.
Furthermore, Viton exhibits excellent compression set resistance and low gas permeability. These properties prove especially valuable in vacuum systems and gas processing equipment. For petrochemical, oil and gas, and chemical processing industries, Viton often becomes the preferred sealing solution. Even though it costs more than NBR, the extended service life and reduced maintenance frequency often justify the investment.
On the other hand, Viton performs poorly in low-temperature environments. Standard grades become brittle below approximately -20°C, which limits their use in cold climate applications. Also, Viton does not work well with certain chemicals such as ketones, esters, and amines. Therefore, engineers must carefully review chemical compatibility charts before specifying Viton seals.
Silicone: Specialized Performance for Extreme Temperature Ranges
In contrast, silicone rubber offers the widest temperature range of the three materials. It remains flexible at extremely low temperatures, often down to -60°C or lower, while also handling high temperatures up to 230°C. This broad thermal range makes silicone seals valuable in applications with extreme temperature fluctuations. Additionally, silicone provides excellent resistance to ozone, UV radiation, and weathering.
Moreover, silicone exhibits good biocompatibility and low toxicity, which explains its use in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. It also offers excellent electrical insulation properties for specialized equipment. Despite these advantages, silicone has notable drawbacks that limit its use in hydraulic systems. Specifically, silicone has poor tensile strength and tear resistance compared to NBR and Viton.
Similarly, silicone does not perform well with petroleum-based oils, fuels, and solvents—fluids commonly found in hydraulic systems. For this reason, silicone o-rings rarely serve as the primary seal in standard hydraulic actuators. Instead, they find application in specialized scenarios where extreme temperature resistance or specific regulatory compliance takes priority.

Selecting the Right Material for Your Hydraulic Actuators
All things considered, no single “standard” o-ring material applies universally across all applications. The optimal choice depends on your specific operating conditions, media compatibility requirements, temperature range, and budget constraints. For general-purpose hydraulic systems with moderate temperatures and petroleum-based fluids, NBR serves as the practical standard due to its balance of performance and cost.
For more demanding applications involving high temperatures or aggressive chemicals, Viton becomes the standard upgrade path. Many valve actuator manufacturers offer Viton seals as a premium option for process industry clients. Meanwhile, silicone remains a specialized material reserved for extreme temperature environments or regulatory-specific applications rather than general hydraulic use.
